The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced updates to service hours at 35 land border crossings between Canada and the United States. The changes, effective from 12:01 am, reflect a collaborative effort with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to improve border efficiency, security, and resource allocation.
The CBSA and CBP extensively reviewed traffic patterns and resource demands at these border crossings. This analysis revealed that some locations handle minimal traffic during specific hours, averaging fewer than two vehicles per hour. By reallocating resources from quieter ports to busier ones, both agencies aim to:
- Enhance processing efficiency for travellers and goods.
- Streamline enforcement and border security operations.
- Reduce complications arising from misaligned service hours between Canada and the U.S.
The CBSA has taken steps to minimize the impact on travellers and local communities. Alternative border crossings are available within a 100-kilometre radius for those affected by reduced hours. Additionally, most changes apply during historically low-traffic periods, limiting disruptions to commuters and trade routes.
